Final Two Face Off
On Canadian Idol

Mitch MacDonald and Theo Tams faced off for the title this week on Canadian Idol. With three songs apiece, they each tackled a song of their own choosing, an original Idol song and a song of the judges' choosing. The finale was not the superstar showdown we expected it to be at the start of this season, but considering how lackluster the show has been since the Top 10, the guys' performances were pretty good. We're not jumping out of our seats with excitement on this one, but it was a decent showing nonetheless.

Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI6 Top 2: Final Face Off.

Mitch MacDonald "Paris"
Liza: I'd never heard this song before. It's pretty. The only real fault I had with it was his lower register, which was barely audible, and a few off notes here and there. I did LOL at Zack's criticism about how he constantly scoops his notes because it's so true. I also found it quite amusing that Faith Hill turned a song about a mugging into a love song.
Score: 8.5
Destiny: Mitch showed off his signature sound and style on this one. This performance of this song was the kind of thing that would appear in a commercial or tv show and then be a must-download hit.
Score: 9.0
Tammy: You could tell he loved this song, and this was his strongest performance of the night. The benefit of choosing these lesser known songs is that he really has nothing to compare himself against, because the majority of the audience has never heard this song before (me included). He was great here, and completely in his element.
Score: 8.7

Theo Tams "Good Mother"
Liza: Ah, good ol' Theo. You can always count on him to pick a nice piano song by a female singer, just as you can always count on Mitch to pick an obscure song by a Nova Scotian. Having said that, this was really gorgeous.
Score: 9.5
Destiny: Love the song choice, but did not love the arrangement. I wanted him to visit the chorus more than once. He does belong behind that piano singing this kind of tune, though. I just wish he knew himself as an artist a little better so he could fully capitalize on his strengths to make a performance like this really soar.
Score: 8.9
Tammy: While I love this song, I wasn’t a fan of how he sang the first half. He musical-theatre’d it up a bit too much for me at the beginning. Aside from that, I thought it was probably one of his strongest performances on the show.
Score: 9.0

Mitch MacDonald "Where We Begin"
Liza: The first few notes were painful - out of tune. It definitely got better, but I'm not sure that's a winning song or performance. Sass continues to bring the useless - "How can you not love you?" Oh brother.
Score: 7.25
Destiny: This song was pretty much a nothing song. Mitch sounded OK on it, but it was not memorable at all.
Score: 8.0
Tammy: This is not the type of song Mitch should be singing. It’s way too pop-ish. He did as best as he could with what he was given. I don’t really think uptempo songs are his forte, either.
Score: 8.0

Theo Tams "Sing"
Liza: I think Theo may have just won it right here. Aside from the opening, which sounded like a typical Idol coronation song, this sounded like a viable hit single, like something OneRepublic could easily turn into a radio smash.
Score: 9.0
Destiny: Wow. Liza is a fan of this song. Me? Not so much. I thought it was about as nothingness as Mitch's original song. He sounded good on it. Just not a memorable song for me.
Score: 8.5
Tammy: Uh...good effort? This song should just really never be sung again by anyone, ever.
Score: 7.0

Mitch MacDonald "If"
Liza: Are the judges trying to cause Mitch to lose with this dull song choice? Did Jacob Hoggard trip when he heard his sound-alike? Are the Idols and judges trying to lull us to sleep? When Theo's coronation song is the most upbeat song of the night, that's really scary.
Score: 8.0
Destiny: I like this song, but it is a bit mellow to close the season with. Seeing Jacob made me wish he would jump onstage into the competition to liven things up.
Score: 8.6
Tammy: Mitch looked so uncomfortable singing this song, you could tell from the moment he opened his mouth, that Mitch feared that he would crash and burn during this song a la so many others tempting a range-y song (Aerosmith’s Dream On comes to mind...I still have Jordis Unga Rockstar flashbacks that haunt me). The song was perfectly suited to his voice, however, and if he’d had just a little more confidence (or hid his fear a little better), it would have made for a faultless performance.
Score: 9.0

Theo Tams "I Want To Know What Love Is"
Liza: Man, what uninspired song choices by the judges. It suits Theo, though, with the churchy sound and allowance for big glory notes. This song is really cheesy, though, and Theo actually made it cheesier. This show ended with a whimper, which is really fitting because that's exactly how the season ended for me.
Score: 7.0
Destiny: I echo Liza's sentiments about the song choice, performance and season.
Score: 7.0
Tammy: I’m not sure who’s to blame for the song arrangement (my guess is Theo himself), but I think the song was certainly no gift from the judges. The whole thing was a bit forgettable (and a bit Clay Aikenesque).
Score: 7.8

Who Should Win
Liza: Theo
Destiny: I don't know! Mitch is more unique, but if Theo would have grasped his his full potential as an artist he should've won. I'll go with Mookie.
Tammy:

Who Will Win
Liza: Theo, although I will LOL if Mitch wins thanks to regional voting
Destiny: Mitch
Tammy: I have no idea who will win this thing. Ultimately, I think Theo’s style will probably appeal to a broader base of people.
