Anne Murray & Anything
For CI Top 4

The remaining four contestants worked with Canadian legend Anne Murray this week on CI. Murray provided some of the most astute advice given all season. The contestants seemed to use her advice, however they still turned in an overall tepid bunch of performances. In the second half of the night, they were able to choose any song in the world that they wanted, and things didn't get much better. Good, not great. It's like they got zoned out on the easy listening of Anne Murray's music all week and weren't really present on the stage.

Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI6 Top 4: Anne Murray & Anything.

Mitch MacDonald "Cotton Jenny"
Liza: I'm not sure why, but I was thinking it was Neil Diamond night for a little while here. Mitch gave a pretty good performance. I'm not like jumping out of my chair, but it wasn't bad.
Score: 7.5
Destiny: Yeah, this wasn't greatness, but it was OK. Nothing memorable.
Score: 7.5
Tammy: This was just tolerable. The song was a bit boring, not too much to catch your interest as he sang his way from Point A to Point B. To sum it up: in one ear, and out the other.
Score: 7.0

Earl Stevenson "Killing Me Softly"
Liza: Oh no, the drunk uncle is back. I really wish he'd just sit on a stool and just sing instead of rock back and forth and pace around the stage aimlessly. It's so distracting!
Score: 7.0
Destiny: I think the recorded version of Earl's take on this song could be a hit. The live performance, however, was a bit disconnected. I'm not sure what the problem was, but it's like Earl needed a second take. The best part of the performance? The "Earl Is A Very Rare Pearl" sign in the audience. Awesome.
Score: 7.9
Tammy: I always find it distracting when an artist changes the gender for which a song was originally directed towards. This was no exception. And how he sang the song was just sort of ‘blah’, another Point A to Point B. The performers are just barely showing up tonight.
Score: 7.0

Drew Wright "Hey Daddy"
Liza: Drew looks quite a bit different without the facial hair, and I guess that's pretty fitting because I don't think Drew has been able to settle on a musical identity, much less a physical identity. I'm still not sure who he is as an artist outside of a singer with a really good voice.
Score: 8.0
Destiny: Good call, Liza. Drew certainly has tried to recreate himself more times and in more ways than perhaps anyone I've seen on an Idol show. I must say, though, that this is probably the best look he's sported. The song choice was on the charming side, and he sounded great on it.
Score: 8.5
Tammy: I surprised myself by liking this. When I heard the words ‘from the children’s album’, I’ll admit to being a bit frightened. But Drew sang the song nicely, and made it infinitely listenable? Plus, he’s slightly dreamy this week? Aside from the caked-on makeup, that is. Go easy on the powder, dude!
Score: 8.5

Theo Tams "You Don't Know Me"
Liza: I'm really impressed by Anne Murray as a mentor; I'm glad she told Theo to cut back on the licks. I hope she also told him that rainbow-colored horizontal stripes are just not a good look for his build. He sang it well, but it was a little bit bland and old-fashioned.
Score: 7.5
Destiny: Talk about Neil Diamond! Theo's outfit was totally Diamond-esque. Jake said he looked like a matinee idol, but I thought he looked more like an old lounge singer. The song choice was greatness, but Theo didn't live up to its full potential. If ever there was a song on which he should have played the piano, it was this! He just doesn't have a good sense of himself as an artist. And I must say that his voice has lost its distinction throughout this competition. The best part of this performance, like Earl's, was the audience signage. The "Theo Hunkstable" sign was greatness.
Score: 7.0
Tammy: Lose a scarf, gain an enormous belt buckle pair with black dress pants and a purple silk shirt? I’m not sure this is an upgrade. The approach to the song was as puzzling as the outfit. He just seemed to be a bit too ‘safe’ on this song, and never really embraced the emotion of the song. It was nice, but he had the potential to go all the way with this song, and the angle he chose was a bit disappointing.
Score: 8.0

Mitch MacDonald "Between The Bars"
Liza: Sometimes I can listen to Mitch, sometimes his tone grates on my last nerve. Unfortunately, this one was one of the times where his tone grated on my nerves. I thought it was a cool song choice, but I just couldn't listen to that voice anymore.
Score: 7.0
Destiny: Mitch's voice didn't really grate on me, but I did think the performance lacked energy and impact. It was just OK. Not what I want to be seeing at this point in the game.
Score: 7.0
Tammy: Ye gads, where did Mitch’s mojo go this week? This was another so-so, completely forgettable performance. I’m not sure if he has enough extra credit from weeks past to ensure his safety for another week.
Score: 6.5

Earl Stevenson "The Joker"
Liza: Sorry, I kind of lost focus for about 95% of the song after he so very cheesily inserted himself and Ben Mulroney into the song lyrics right off the bat. And his hesitation in responding to Jake's comment about feeling he didn't want to be there can't help his cause.
Score: 6.5
Destiny: I felt like Earl was having problems hearing this week. Both performances, but particularly this one, started off with him looking puzzled, like he couldn't hear the band and didn't know when the song was starting. Then it seemed like he couldn't hear what the judges were saying to him, making him appear totally out of it. That being said, this was a great song choice for him. I wanted him to get a do-over, because clearly there were technical issues going on that seriously messed up his delivery.
Score: 7.0
Tammy: Why does Earl look so uncomfortable this week? He used to be so loose on stage, but now he just appears to be over-thinking everything that he does. Maybe he’s just done with this show? Not that I can blame him, because we all know what the future of a Canadian Idol winner entails (a quick dive into obscurity, for one), but still! The dude is capable of being much better than this, at any rate.
Score: 6.5

Drew Wright "Gravity"
Liza: He sounded AMAZING on this song, and what a great song choice. I don't know what Zack's deal is. This was one of my favorite performances of the season.
Score: 9.0
Destiny: I was thinking the same thing! I thought the judges were going to crown this one of the best performances of the season, but, no, instead Zack pelts him with the exact opposite response. This was a good song choice, and Drew sounded great on it. And this was perhaps the first time we've actually heard a contestant's guitar on the show instead of just seeing them strum it.
Score: 9.0
Tammy: Aw, I loved the Continuum album (and manage to hate Mayer’s smug off-stage self at the same time), so he gets props for me for song selection. He wasn’t quite as into the song as I would have liked, but it was still a B+ effort, and left me wanting more.
Score: 8.5

Theo Tams "Chariot"
Liza: I really. do. not. like. when Theo tries to move around on stage. It's all quite awkward and cringe-worthy. And his vocals actually suffered a bit when he did that. Performance of the night? Hardly!
Score: 7.75
Destiny: I totally agree with Liza's assessment of Theo's moving around the stage. Yikes. I seriously thought he was going to fall off the bench when he first stood on it. And his vocals were lackluster and all over the place. I don't know how Theo lost his magic, but there is just nothing really special there anymore. The judges were waaaay off the mark on this one.
Score: 6.9
Tammy: Agh! That scarf is back! Are you determined to give me something to hate on, man? I almost want to see him booted off for his crimes against fashion alone. And wow, but he is a bit flat on this one. The piano jumping seemed a bit contrived and a bit at-odds with the song. Theo hasn’t overwhelmed me this week.
Score: 7.8
