Beatles For CI Top 5
The remaining five contestants tackled the music of the Beatles this week on Canadian Idol. The judges were ecstatic with the night's performances. Our panelists? Not so much.
Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI6 Top 5: Beatles.
Earl "With A Little Help From My Friends"
Liza: It was totally the Joe Cocker version, but he really did that justice. The bluesy qualities he has in his voice are just great. And he sang it without the drunk uncle movements. THANK YOU!
Score: 9.0
Tammy: This felt a little too much like a Joe Cocker impersonation for my liking. Not very much Earl in there at all. It was tolerable, but why would you listen to this when you can listen to the real thing? Meh. Note to Earl: buy a hat that fits your head, dude. Also? I think he’s in trouble this week.
Score: 7.0
Mookie "Come Together"
Liza: I love that he dressed for the occasion with that Sgt. Pepper jacket, and I enjoyed how he utilized the horn section. I was a little iffy on the ending, but overall he definitely entertained. Best version ever heard, though? Let's not get hysterical, Zack.
Score: 8.25
Tammy: I didn’t particularly care for this version of the song. He sort of took everything that was cool about the song, and dropped it. Worst Mookie performance yet. And how uncreative was the Sgt. Pepper outfit? Booooo!
Score: 7.0
Theo "The Long And Winding Road"
Liza: I was totally expecting "Let It Be" and was disappointed to hear it would be this song because I just don't think it's the most exciting song and has the potential to become plodding. To Theo's credit, he didn't let it happen, but he also did veer into David Archuleta territory with the excessive runs and melodic liberties, which I'm not a big fan of.
Score: 7.5
Tammy: This was kind of boring? And predictable. But he didn’t embarrass himself or anything. Again I say: meh.
Score: 7.8
Mitch "In My Life"
Liza: During the opening, Mitch and the backup singers just did not seem to be on the same page. It was quite off-putting. As were the creepy bug-eyed looks into the camera. Other than that, I thought he sounded as good as he's ever sounded on this show. And his melodic liberties didn't sound show-offy.
Score: 8.0
Tammy: Aw. My love-fest continues for this one. I love this song, and he didn’t mess it up, so props to him! Yes, you are adorable, Mitch! I liked how he changed up the melody just slightly to make it his own.
Score: 9.1
Drew "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Liza: Drew looked uncomfortable singing this, and it made me uncomfortable. Sass may have loved it, but the pained facial expressions were almost comical to me. And nice guyliner. Heh. His vocals were pretty good, but I was holding my breath a few times because I wasn't sure he'd be able to hit the high notes. When it looks like too much effort, it's not a good thing.
Score: 7.25
Tammy: Well, he certainly gave a more passionate performance this time around. He might be walking the tightrope this week, however, because it came across as more of a ‘musician’ performance than a vocal performance (though he wasn’t weak, vocally). It will be interesting to see how this pans out for him.
Score: 8.5
