British Invasion With
Tom Jones On CI

The top seven Canadian Idol finalists hit the stage this week singing their choice of British hits under the mentorship of Tom Jones. As totally fab as the theme may be, the show proved to be less than thrilling as the contestants turned in their typical tepid performances. Despite the major fawning by the judges, there really wasn't anything to write home about.

Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI6 Top 7: British Invasion.

Mark Day "Bleeding Love"
Liza: Oh my word. The diva songs are back! I think Mark made a big mistake in covering such a popular current song. It's too easy to make the comparisons, especially when you don't do much to change the arrangement. He didn't even sing it all that well; some of his notes were off. This was pretty much a karaoke performance. Nothing original or impressive whatsoever.
Score: 5.5
Destiny: Another nothing performance from Mark. Sure, he was in tune, but there is absolutely nothing else to say about this.
Score: 6.5

Mitch MacDonald "Jealous Guy"
Liza: I think I was so glad that he didn't pick "Imagine" that I probably enjoyed this more than I normally would. But honestly, it wouldn't have been hard to enjoy this because I think Mitch really did a nice job with this song. Ironically enough, while the judges didn't like this but liked most of everything else he's done all year, this was probably my favorite performance of his.
Score: 8.25
Destiny: I do not think this was Mitch's best showing by far. I liked the song choice but have to agree with the judges that his arrangement was just wrong. He not only missed the heart of the song, he also sounded rough. His voice always teeters on the edge of appealing and off-pitch, and this week it fell towards the latter big time.
Score: 7.0

Drew Wright "Creep"
Liza: Tom Jones gave Drew some great advice because I think that has been his problem - he's been all over the place this year. If this is the real Drew, I approve! I like the new look a lot, and his vocals were ridiculous tonight. Like Holy Glory Note, Batman!
Score: 9.25
Destiny: This was one of Drew's better performances. He sounded great on the song. It started out a little dull, but overall this was a nice, professional showing. He looked his best, too.
Score: 8.8

Theo Tams "You Had Me"
Liza: I've been making fun of Mark for singing diva songs all the time, but I shouldn't leave Theo out because that boy is always singing songs by female artists. But Theo just makes it work every time out, and you don't think about who originally sang it because he brings his own thing to each song. This week, he brought a show and sold the heck out of it. Loved that growl in his voice.
Score: 9.0
Destiny: This was not my favorite Theo performance. It seemed false and forced and just all-around ill-fitting. Whereas the judges feel that Theo is gaining ground and proving himself a star, I find him to be getting further and further away from the mark. Unfortunately, my feelings for Theo are going the way of this song: He had me. He lost me.
Score: 7.5

Mookie Moris "Lola"
Liza: I really enjoyed this, but I think Mookie might be hitting the seal again despite (or maybe because of) the judges' OTT praise. There were times where the backup singers were drowning him out, and I think I heard the faux-Brit accent again.
Score: 8.0
Destiny: Another great song choice by Mookie. And another great performance full of star quality. He did have some minor vocal problems at the top of the song, but he turned in such an artist performance that it doesn't really matter.
Score: 8.8

Amberly Thiessen "Put Your Records On"
Liza: I would have thought this would have been another great choice for her voice, but she struggled a little bit with those high notes. She did add more of a performance quality this time, so I give her props for that, but it was total karaoke. She did absolutely nothing original to it, and I thought the judges' tongue bath was a bit OTT.
Score: 7.0
Destiny: This was another passionless/robotic/lifeless performance from Amberly. Dull as dishwater. I don't get why the judges fawn so much over her. And if that was perfect pitch (as the judges proclaimed), then I'll eat my hat. She was so shrill she nearly had me reaching for my mute button.
Score: 5.9

Earl Stevenson "Change The World"
Liza: That little sing-songy sing-along that Earl took us on with his arm waving and ridiculous howling at the end really just murdered the sentimentality of that song. Ugh.
Score: 5.0
Destiny: This was not Earl's best performance. He was still one of the more interesting contestants of the night, but he seemed to be a bit off-track performance-wise. His vocals were all over the place, too. Nothing special.
Score: 7.5

Who Should Be Eliminated
Liza: Mark!
Destiny: Mark

Who Will Be Eliminated
