Canadian Idol Top 10
Hit The Big Stage

The sixth season of Canadian Idol hit the finals stage this week as the Top 10 contestants hit the big stage performing the music of David Bowie. Unfortunately, though this season has seen some of the strongest talent in the show's history, this week's theme was a bit too limiting, and the show fell flat. Not everyone can be Jacob Hoggard (though it would have been nice if someone at least tried). Obscure songs were the major culprit plaguing the night, joined by an overall lack of focus, passion and showmanship. Considering the majorly talented pool of semi-finalists, this lackluster evening was certainly not what anyone envisioned for the first round of this season's finals. Here's hoping the coming weeks see the finalists up their game in a major way.

Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI6 Top 10: David Bowie.

Drew Wright "Five Years"
Liza: Drums! This is a first on a live Idol show. I'm not sure that it's particularly smart, however. It's hard to engage the audience from behind a drumkit unless you're doing a killer drum solo. Drew pulled some serious creepy multi-colored bug eyes during this. I'm not familiar with the original, but I'm not sure I'm feeling this Jason Mraz does David Bowie vibe. Crowd loved it, though, so what do I know?
Score: 7.0
Destiny: I agree that the drums, while something new to the show, did not really do anything to help Drew out. He played them much like other singers on this show play the guitar: more like a prop than an instrument that is adding something to the song. He sounded OK vocally, but it wasn't anything that will be remembered even tomorrow. The best part of the performance was that Drew looked his best. The sleek new hairstyle was a definite plus.
Score: 7.4
Tammy: I actually really liked this, aside from Drew taking a turn on the drums, which seemed rather superfluous, considering that made two drummers for this song (and Drew's technique wasn't all that great anyways, so I'm not sure he really did himself any favours there with that choice). I enjoyed the song choice though, and thought he sang it well.
Score: 8.0

Adam Castelli "Rebel Rebel"
Liza: OK I'm already getting sick of the gimmicks, and we're only two songs in. I think Adam picked a good enough song to not have to resort to the motorcycle entrance, but after hearing his flat vocals and somewhat spastic ending, I can see why he did it.
Score: 6.0
Destiny: What was supposed to be a cool rebellious motorcycle entrance was more like an ultra-cautious parking job. It was poorly executed to say the least. The rest of the performance was pretty good, however. He commanded the song with confidence. It wasn't anything amazing or original, but it was good.
Score: 7.5
Tammy: Did he just roll up on a police cruiser? Interesting...um...strategy? Gimmicks aside, Adam sounded good, but I think this one will be going by the way of Jason Greeley. There's only so much of that 'bar music' sound that people can tolerate, yo.
Score: 8.0

Mark Day "Dancing In The Streets"
Liza: I felt like I was at karaoke night in WeHo, except the performances in WeHo are much better than this. The oversinging, the twirling and the butt-shaking were beyond ridiculous. Mark is just totally making a mockery of this competition, and I feel so bad for all the talented guys who were eliminated so that Mark could "grace" us with his campy presence.
Score: 3.0
Destiny: This performance was not worthy of a spot in the finals round of this competition. Fortunately, Mark is the sole finalist who is seriously not worthy of his spot (unlike the last several seasons of CI, which all had several less-than-talented fillers like Mark). This was just a joke of a performance, and is wasn't a good joke. Total waste of time. And the outfit, especially the pants, was just all sorts of wrong.
Score: 3.0
Tammy: I don't even know what to say? Something tells me that Newfoundland will keep Mark around for another week (and to be honest, I don't really mind, he kind of livens things up...standing out from the 'mediocre singer-songwriter' crew that we are being force-fed this season). But yeah, I won't be torn to bits if he gets cut this week...the boy is kinda asking for it with this song selection. And if he's gonna be flaming for all the world to see, I wish he'd commit to it with some fun costuming or better dance moves. Own it! Work it!
Score: 7.5

Mookie Morris "The Man Who Sold The World"
Liza: Unfair perhaps, but Mookie didn't come close to reaching the emotional level that Jordis Unga got on RockStar: INXS. She gutted me when she sang that song, and this one said absolutely nothing to me. That first line sounded a bit wonky as well.
Score: 7.25
Destiny: I have to agree with Sass who basically said that Mookie himself was the best part of this performance. His vocals and interpretation of the song weren't especially impressive, but he is undeniably a rock star. He totally belongs in the 1960s with his look, vibe and performance style. Definitely the most interesting one thus far. This Keanu-esque guy is going to be in this competition until the end methinks.
Score: 8.0
Tammy: Mookie was a bit of a disappointment this week. I thought this was a terrible version of the song, tossing away the most recognizable melodic elements. And that sweater he was wearing needs to be trash-bound ASAP. And get a haircut! What was that mess on his head? Good grief. Step it up, you're on national tv!
Score: 7.7

Amberly Thiessen "Space Oddity"
Liza: Well that's one way of not having to face the blue catsuit Jacob Hoggard performance of the same song. Like Drew, I'm finding these coffeehouse versions of these songs a little off-putting. Amberly's vocals were really pretty, but it's just very weird to me.
Score: 7.5
Destiny: I kind of get what Amberly was going after in her attempt of an artsy presentation of the song, but it didn't work. There was no heart or passion in her delivery, so it all just felt flat and contrived. This night needs a serious dose of Jacob Hoggard's antics and passion!
Score: 6.0
Tammy: I wondered who would be foolish enough to pick this song. This song is more known as a 'Jacob' song than a Bowie song to CI viewers, and the bar is set ridiculously high after his memorable spandex-clad version. Amberly's was just nice...and...boring. It was sweet, but empty.
Score: 7.4

Sebastian Pigott "Let's Spend The Night Together"
Liza: When I saw Lukas Rossi in his video intro, I thought maybe he'd have given him pointers on how to rock this song. But, alas, it appears he did not since it took way too long for him to start rocking. This was easily his worst performance of the season (I heard that bad guitar-playing also), but it wasn't the worst of the night by any means. I'm looking at you, Mark Day!
Score: 6.25
Destiny: This wasn't my favorite Sebastian performance, but by no means was it terrible. I was as seriously surprised as Sebastian was by the judges' negative remarks across the board. The only problem I had with the performance was that it needed to be longer, or lots of the interaction and filler with the band and backup singers needed to be cut so he could have put more singing into the arrangement. On the physical side of things, Sebastian looked good yet again. Sexy and so charismatic!
Score: 8.3
Tammy: It is terribly shallow of me to admit that I didn't even notice the horrid guitar playing the first time I watched this performance? The Pretty completely distracted me. I could watch him with the mute button and be very, very entertained. I actually liked the way he arranged the song, even if it never really developed into something great. Have I mentioned that he's Pretty? Rowr!
Score: 10.0 (hee!)

Earl Stevenson "Rock And Roll Suicide"
Liza: OK, Canada. If you must persist in voting for the "Funny Guy", it should be THIS guy, and not Mark Day. I have criticized Earl for his drunk uncle dancing, but I can't hate on a guy for getting lost in his songs and feeling it the way he does. The thing about Earl is that he's HONEST in what he does, and nothing he does feels put on, Mark Day!
Score: 7.5
Destiny: As usual, Earl turned in a fun performance complete with strong vocals. He is unique that's for sure. I find him enjoyable from start to finish.
Score: 8.0
Tammy: This guy looks like he'd be a fun dude to be around. He's quirky, but he's got the talent to back it up. I think he'd put on a good show outside of CI, and it wouldn't bother me in the least if he made it all the way to the end. I like him!
Score: 8.5

Katherine St-Laurent "Cat People"
Liza: I'm a little torn because I think she picked an awful song, but at the same time, she really kind of smashed it. Bandzilla overpowered her at times, but she rocked it out.
Score: 8.0
Destiny: Katherine sounded really strong on this song. I agree with Liza in that I didn't love the song choice, but I can't deny that she sang it well. Her accent adds interest to her vocals.
Score: 8.0
Tammy: There's no denying that the girl can wail, but I wasn't especially blown away by the rest of it. It was just okay for me, performance-wise.
Score: 8.2

Theo Tams "Silly Boy Blue"
Liza: Best of the night by far. There's something about Theo's voice that just hits you immediately and draws you in. He's great. I'm with Jake - Theo is in a different league than the others on this show.
Score: 9.0
Destiny: I normally agree that Theo's voice is something special, but I wasn't feeling it in this performance. The song itself and his vocals were both on the dull side. My least favorite Theo performance to date.
Score: 7.5
Tammy: Easily the most professional performance of the night. It didn't wow me, but it was enough to win the night. The Ryan Cabrera-inspired 'do is a bit dated and needs to go immediately.
Score: 9.0

Mitch Macdonald "Moonage Daydream"
Liza: The judges may have bought into it, but I'm still having trouble reconciling Mitch's altar boy looks (the facial hair doesn't change that too much) and his vocal tone with songs like this. I'm not really sure what to say. I did like it better when listening to the recap.
Score: 7.25
Destiny: Mitch really stepped up his game with this performance. He sounded and looked stronger than ever, and his effort certainly paid off. This was the best performance of the night. Granted, the night was seriously lackluster overall, but that doesn't take away that this was Mitch's personal best.
Score: 8.5
Tammy: Why did I not notice how pretty his eyes were until now? Very nice. I'm not familiar with the song, but I like what he did with it, and thought that he sounded very natural abandoning his acoustic sound and going for a rocked-up version. I approve! Come back next week.
Score: 8.8
