Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber
The Top 6 contestants got to work with the musical genius Andrew Lloyd Webber this week on American Idol. Unfortunately, most of the singers didn't do the material justice, and most of the song choices were ill-chosen. That being said, there were a couple standouts who made a little musical magic.
Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the AI7 Top 6: Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Syesha Mercado "One Rock N Roll Too Many"
Tammy: Having been given a theme that was supposedly right up her alley, I must admit I was expecting a bit more from Syesha tonight. She just comes across as a bit too robotic during her performances, and she still hasn't convinced me that she has any charisma. Draping yourself across a piano and dancing with the band leader came across as desperate, not divine, dearie.
Score: 7.9
Destiny: I, too, was not that impressed with this. Despite what the judges said, Syesha is not near the level of a Broadway superstar vocally or as a performer. I felt like I was watching an audition for a musical, and it was not worthy of a callback. Weak vocals and stage presence. It is way past her time to go on this show.
Score: 7.5
Jason Castro "Memory"
Tammy: I must have been watching a different show than the AI judges. Once again I was sucked into the Castro Vortex. I loved his take on 'Memory', and how he opted for the softer touch during the climax of the song, giving it a haunting twist.
Score: 9.0
Destiny: This would not be my first (or even fifth) song choice for Jason out of the ALW songbook, but he did manage to do a lovely job with it. I admit that I, too, like Tammy, was sucked yet again into the Castro Vortex. His voice and spirit are just so captivating. Not my favorite performance from him, but enjoyable nonetheless. I just had to laugh when Paula seriously offered up the profound revelation that a big-voiced female is not who Jason is.
Score: 8.8
Brooke White "You Must Love Me"
Tammy: Oh boy. I must say, I was mighty annoyed when she stopped the song, then started over. You don't see professional artists pulling that kind of move! But she forgot the lyrics, so what are ya gonna do? It's hard to hate on her, considering she looked like she was going to collapse into a big weepy mess backstage as soon as the show went to commercial. I honestly didn't think her performance was that bad, and her semi-panic only added to the intensity of the song. I actually thought that by the time it was all over, it was one of her better performances of the season.
Score: 8.7
Destiny: I have to agree with Tammy on pretty much all counts. I was a little annoyed (as much as one can be with Brooke) at her stopping the song. It was magnified by the fact that it was done during a theatrical song, because a professional would NEVER stop a theatrical show and start over. Bottom line is this is Brooke's second stop/start of a song on American Idol, and she is losing her focus more and more with each passing week. It may be time for her to go home (though there are two less talented contestants who should hit the road before she does). I agree, though, that despite all the mess, this performance was one of Brooke's better vocal showings.
Score: 8.0
David Archuleta "Think of Me Fondly"
Tammy: I was not a big fan of this Jon Secada-ish remix. The song was kind of just...there...leaving me feeling blah. David never really seems to tap into the song emotionally enough for my liking. The whole thing was just too vanilla.
Score: 8.0
Destiny: I have to disagree on this one. I really enjoyed Archuleta's spin on the song, and I was impressed that he was the most crossover artist of the night. I thought for sure we'd get a straight-on big vocal performance from him this week. This wouldn't be my song choice for him (I was certain he'd do something from Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), but he did it well. He continued to loosen up onstage this week. He still has a ways to go, but he's improving and charming.
Score: 8.9
Carly Smithson "Jesus Christ Superstar"
Tammy: You know you're in trouble when Randy compliments your fashion sense. Ye gads, but that was a horrendous looking outfit, with loud pattern providing a big blotch across her midsection. Not good. The music was equally loud, and Carly was enthusiastic in her delivery, for once not looking like she wished the stage would swallow her whole. I'm not sure the song will win her any new fans, though (or lure back her old ones).
Score: 8.3
Destiny: I didn't love Carly doing this song. Her botching of the lyrics in the first half of the song really didn't sit well with me, and she looked a mess. That being said, I did think this was her best vocal performance of the season.
Score: 7.5
David Cook "Music of the Night"
Tammy: I was uncomfortable watching this. Despite the musical theatre background, David looked very awkward moving about the stage tonight, like he didn't quite know what to do with himself when he doesn't have the 'rawker' mode switched on. His vocals were decent enough, but the unnecessary wailing at the end of the song seemed a bit show-offy a la Mad TV's Stewart "Look what I can do!".
Score: 8.3
Destiny: I SO disagree. Cook was confident, commanded the stage and sounded fantastic. I thought it was one of the best performances of the season. He looked good to boot.
Score: 9.0
