Judges' Choice, Viewers' Choice For Canadian Idol Top 3
The Canadian Idol Top 3 performed two songs apiece this week, one chosen by the judges and one chosen by the viewers. The contestants prepared for the week with a little one-on-one mentoring by Sass Jordan.
Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI5 Top 3: Judges & Viewers.
Jaydee Bixby "Break It To Them Gently"
Liza: A big issue Jaydee has had throughout the competition is that he rarely connects with the lyric. This time, he has a good grasp of the appropriate emotions and puts a nice country (and non-Elvis) spin to it. This wasn't his best vocal, but it was his most complete performance of the year.
Score: 8.5
Tammy: See, I love this song, and I didn't think that he connected
enough with the lyrics. The way the song started with Jaydee in a posed position at the front of the stage was entirely too distracting and unnatural, and immediately took me out of the song. I did like he made the song his own, and as the judges stated, it would be quite easy to imagine this song on the radio.
Score: 8.4
Brian Melo "Whiter Shade Of Pale"
Liza: Hmm ... this was not a song I'd have even considered picking for him. But better him than anyone else. No one else on this show would have been able to pull this off, especially during that long instrumental break. I mean, really ... can you imagine Matt with that instrumental break? The audience would have fallen asleep. Brian got the audience to put their arms in the air and sway right there, and he also got them to shriek during the "The crowd called out for more" line.
Score: 8.75
Tammy: Brian managed to update this song via his unique tone alone. The song was an excellent (and highly unexpected) choice for him. The one area where I have to nitpick is the halting manner in which he sang the opening bars to the chorus. That is just bad breathing technique. Other than that, I loved it.
Score: 9.0
Carly Rae Jepsen "At Seventeen"
Liza: Way to challenge a girl, judges ... give her a song that lets her do what she's been doing all season. But maybe the challenge was for her to remain on key. I don't know this song at all ... is it supposed to sound un-melodic or was that just Carly? The judges gave her a total tongue bath for that. I don't think this performance held a candle to Ryan's or Kalan's judges' choice songs. Or Theresa's. Or Jacob's. Or even Gary's. I don't really get it. But I must say thank goodness she finally got out of the clutches of the makeup artists. She looks great without all that gunk.
Score: 7.75
Tammy: Ha! I'm glad I'm not the only one who got their back up over the 'this is soooo much better than Kalan and Ryan' comment. Because first? It wasn't all that great. And second? It's not necessary to insult another individual in order to pay a compliment. I thought the performance was rather dull. I'm a bit more familiar with the song than Liza is, and usually, it works in that mellow, Joni Mitchell-esque kind of way. The way Carly Rae sang it? Didn't so much work. And can I just add that I hate the way the judges insinuate that if you don't like what Carly Rae is selling, that basically you're a non-it-getter. Whatever! On the positive side, nice hair extensions, Carly!
Score: 7.4
Jaydee Bixby "Ring Of Fire"
Liza: Oh man, cheesy Jaydee is back. I think that first performance was an aberration. And that part where he hitched his pants up, or as Farley said, "hitched his palomino", was cringe-worthy.
Score: 4.5
Tammy: Yeah...I was not so much loving this. The arrangement was a little too fast for my liking, and yes, high on the cheese-o-meter. Yikes.
Score: 6.0
Brian Melo "Lightning Crashes"
Liza: Watching this after Jaydee's cheese-fest shows just how ridiculous this show can be that Jaydee has a real good chance to beat Brian. This was probably Brian's strongest vocal in a while. I really don't know what Zack is smoking, but hopefully it spurs the Brian fans into action.
Score: 9.25
Tammy: I was baffled by Zack's comment re: Brian's vocals as well. He sounded great to me, and I have to admit that I even got chills at times. Win or lose, I'll be keeping an eye out for what Brian Melo is doing in the future.
Score: 9.4
Carly Rae Jepsen "White Flag"
Liza: I appreciate the fact that she didn't karaoke it and put her own twist on the song, but Pouty McMushmouth put too many twists on the song and turned it into a semi-reggae dance song at the end that kind of ruined it for me. Steffi did it better last year.
Score: 7.25
Tammy: Yeah, what was with the bizarre reggae moment at the end? I didn't think this song worked at all. I didn't like the prop chair, I didn't like the semi-androgynous Annie Lennox inspired ensemble, and I felt the meaning of the song was completely lost when she sang (due in so small part that you couldn't even understand what she WAS singing).
Score: 6.0
Who Should Be Eliminated
Liza: Jaydee
Tammy: Carly Rae
Who Will Be Eliminated
