CI Top 4 Do Standards
The Canadian Idol Top 4 got a little help this week from Paul Anka. With the standards as their theme, each contestant performed two songs apiece Monday night. There wasn’t greatness to be had, but there was decency.
Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI5 Top 4: Standards.
Carly Rae Jepsen "My Heart Belongs To Daddy"
Destiny: The genre certainly suits Carly Rae. This vocal sounded like an old record blaring out of a phonograph. I didn't think she commanded the stage or looked particularly comfortable, but she certainly sounded authentic.
Score: 8.5
Tammy: She was looking very Mandy Moore-ish tonight, was she not? I must say, that was a pretty cute outfit, so kudos for that. She still seems a bit awkward to me onstage, like she's trying to play the part of someone who belongs onstage. Her voice? Well, there were moments when she sounded not bad, and yet I still can't get past the Betty Boop-ishness.
Score: 7.5
Liza: I figured Carly would succeed in this genre, and she is definitely the most-suited for standards amongst who is left, although on this particular song, she got lost in the lower register. I'm a little disturbed by how sultry she sang that, and I really hope "Daddy" isn't literally daddy because that's really creepy.
Score: 7.75
Jaydee Bixby "Fever"
Destiny: OK, so Jaydee finally embraced a song's lyrics and got serious onstage. And the result was a little laughable. Jaydee singing about someone giving him fever? I don't know if he could do anything to make that believable. It was like a kid playing dress up. At least he tried. But I still have to fault him for choosing the inappropriate song for himself in the first place. He sounded pretty good. I didn't have major issues with his rhythm, but I will say it did leave me wanting to hear Michael Buble's passionate and dynamic version.
Score: 7.0
Tammy: Okay, well I did have issues with his rhythm. He was off the beat of the song for 90 percent of his performance. That said, I thought he sounded pretty good, vocally. This may sound like a somewhat random comment, but I could totally imagine hearing him on CBC radio during some sort of quirky programming hour. He seems very 'niche market'.
Score: 8.0
Liza: And I had major issues with Jaydee's rhythm. That was horrifying to watch and listen to. The boy really has no concept of tempo. He's a 100 times worse than Chris Sligh in that regard. And when you muck up the tempo on this song, you really screw the song up. Performance-wise, I'm glad he didn't smile like usual, but I'm still trying to erase the sight of that Elvis move he did.
Score: 4.0
Brian Melo "Mack The Knife"
Destiny: Brian put a lot into this performance. He sounded good and gritty. It wasn't my favorite thing he's ever done, but it was a good job.
Score: 8.5
Tammy: Yeah he sounded good. I think his 'vibe' is what sold the song more than anything. That, and the cool hat. He seemed confident, so people bought it.
Score: 8.3
Liza: I'm just happy that he managed to not cheese the heck out of this song as others have in the past (Clay Aiken, I'm looking at you!). Brian struggled a little bit with that glory note near the end, but I can ignore that because that performance was total gangsta!
Score: 8.5
Dwight D'Eon "I Get A Kick Out of You"
Destiny: Why was Dwight so off-key during this song? You'd think the guy has no singing ability if this was the only thing you saw him do. Yikes. It was just a total bomb all the way around. And Dwight looked like he knew it the entire performance.
Score: 3.0
Tammy: I don't understand why it is so difficult for Dwight to sing the melody of this song. It was as if he had no idea what to do to just sound good. Awkward to watch, painful to listen to.
Score: 3.0
Liza: I wasn't sensing a lot of confidence from Paul Anka. Or from Dwight himself. He just knew he was sunk. That last note was painful! And can I just say how annoying the audience is? Jake says that Dwight would never cut a record like this, and they boo. Come on!
Score: 4.0
Carly Rae Jepsen "I Got It Bad, And That Ain't Good"
Destiny: This was a great performance. Carly Rae really interpreted the lyrics, and that is something very rare on this show. Again, she sounded authentic.
Score: 9.0
Tammy: Meh. I liked this outfit less than the first, and since the clothes are pretty much the only thing I enjoy about Carly, I was left wanting.
Score: 6.8
Liza: Heh. Yeah, that outfit was not too cute. This actually started out as one of my favorite performances of Carly's. Until she went into histrionics. Or as the judges like to call it, showing vulnerability and emotion. I just felt like she totally overdid it. I wasn't a fan of that last note either.
Score: 8.0
Jaydee Bixby "When You're Smiling"
Destiny: Now this song was a much better fit than his first selection. This was probably his best stage performance to date. He looked and sounded comfortable and believable.
Score: 8.8
Tammy: The force is strong in this one. He will not be slain by Zack's pointed comments! He rebounds mightily! That sound you heard? Preteens everywhere thudding to the floor in a swooning puddle before their television sets.
Score: 9.0
Liza: Ooh dancing! I miss So You Think You Can Dance! I'm glad Jaydee brought a little bit of it with him on the show tonight. I have to say, that part won me over. And he finally picked a song that worked with his corniness and usually inappropriate smiling.
Score: 8.75
Brian Melo "Feeling Good"
Destiny: Brian's voice is so appealing. He commanded this difficult song, and he sounded and looked like a pro. It's nice to see him getting the recognition he deserves.
Score: 9.0
Tammy: This one was just alright for me. Wasn't really feeling the hat, and his voice seemed to be straining quite frequently, which on this particular song, just didn't work.
Score: 7.8
Liza: Oh yikes, this song better not have the same effect it did on American Idol this year (taking out two people in one week!). Brian did well and continues to generate momentum for that inevitable (hopefully) win in a few weeks.
Score: 8.0
Dwight D'Eon "Unforgettable"
Destiny: Yikes again. Dwight had a terrible night. This was another clunker from top to bottom. The whole thing was like a reject audition from the beginning on the season. Not good! I don't know what went wrong with him, as he has proven throughout the competition that he can sing. The judges were really kind to him. He's very lucky.
Score: 3.0
Tammy: This really was just awful. Maybe he was trying to throw himself out of the competition early, a la Hoggard? But it's not like Dwight was ever in danger of winning, anyway. Oh well. He just sang himself out of this competition. See ya, Dwight!
Score: 2.0
Liza: But at least Jacob tried on his last week. He definitely sang well enough to make the finale. Dwight? Didn't sing well enough to earn a nickle on a street corner. This was a total train wreck. I don't know what was more unfortunate - Dwight's dead eyes, the tunelessness or the thin vocals. Although this is WAY out of his (and Brian's) comfort zone, you can either conquer the songs like Brian did or drown like Dwight did.
Score: 3.0
