Canadian Idol Does Pop Rock
The Top 6 contestants on Canadian Idol did Pop Rock music this week.
Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI5 Top 6: Pop Rock.
*Destiny is on vacation this week.
*Tammy is currently protesting Canadian Idol.
Tara Oram "Walking On Sunshine"
Liza: How is doing pop/rock so far out of your comfort zone? I mean, really. It's not that hard. And then I see Tara swaying around like a dweeb, and, well, now I see her point. This performance, especially her stage movements, is so embarrassingly corny, I can barely watch. I'm baffled by the judges' high praise for her performance skills here. And Ben? Why should she get credit for doing songs that aren't country? This isn't Nashville Star; she knew what she was getting into.
Score: 6.5
Jaydee Bixby "Amazed"
Liza: First of all, I have to comment on the fact that the Idols got no face time with Maroon 5. What a rip-off. Jaydee could have used some serious mentoring tonight. Because this was a vocal and performance train-wreck. He looked incredibly awkward up there, and he had some serious vocal problems tonight. His pitch was all over the place. I'd almost prefer his Green Day massacre to this because at least he was on pitch for that one.
Score: 2.5
Matt Rapley "Everything"
Liza: Alright! Matt's piano is back! And it makes such a difference, even when he left it behind. He looks like he's having a blast, and he made the audience have fun with him. It's nice to see him finally show some charisma. I really enjoyed this! Zack was too harsh on the smiling comment. How is it not appropriate to smile through this song?!
Score: 8.5
Carly Rae Jepsen "Come To My Window"
Liza: This was quite a mish-mashed arrangement. It started out normal, turned into a typical Carly Rae tune, rocked out, then turned into a Celine-like glory-note fest before going back into a rock song. What the hey?! It's funny because what Jake and Farley love so much about her (how she can turn any song into a Carly Rae song) is exactly what bugs me about her.
Score: 7.0
Brian Melo "The Dolphins Cry"
Liza: Oh dear, Brian's got a lot to live up to. Magni did an awesome version of this on Rock Star: Supernova last summer. I wonder if Brian's got the Magni hair underneath all those hats. Hmm. Anyway, Brian was doing good until the first chorus. I did not enjoy that part at all. I think he got caught up in the mic stand antics, and it affected his vocal. But he did recover for the second chorus and ended strong. It's just too bad that he looked like a French waiter up there.
Score: 8.0
Dwight D'eon "Smooth"
Liza: SERIOUSLY?! Rob Thomas again?! And I thought Greg's Jason Mraz fetish was bad! And while we're being critical for non-vocal things here, that jacket? Hideous! Vocals were just okay for me, and a little bit copy-cat, but I give him huge massive props for the guitar solos.
Score: 7.5
Who Should Be Eliminated
Liza: Jaydee
Who Will Be Eliminated
Liza: Carly Rae
