Contestants Finally Shine
In The Canadian Idol Top Nine
After a whole season of lackluster performances and personalities, Canadian Idol 5 finally got a jolt of life this week as the contestants sang songs from the 1960s. With good song choices and amped-up delivery, the majority of the finalists turned in personal bests Monday night, and the judges couldn't be happier. Zack even handed out the first two "good onya"s of the season! Here's hoping the contestants keep up (and build upon) this newfound passion for the rest of the season.
Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI5 Top 9: 1960s.
Jaydee Bixby "Runaway"
Destiny: What in the world is Jaydee wearing this week? The shirt looked like a woman's shirt, and the flower broach didn't help matters. His hair and makeup were a little on the womanly side as well. As for the performance, he sang well, but he was totally disconnected from the song. It was all a little weird and a little flat. This was Jaydee's worst showing to date.
Score: 7.0
Tara Oram "Suspicious Minds"
Destiny: Tara was on warp speed tonight. She gave this performance her all and then some. It was a little manic and rushed, but she must be commended for the effort. She looked and sounded good to boot. The judges were right when they crowned this her best performance to date.
Score: 8.5
Matt Rapley "Whipping Post"
Destiny: What happened to Matt Rapley?! This song choice and performance were so inspired and so vastly superior to anything we've seen from him thus far that it was mind-boggling. He turned this classic Rock song into a Blues masterpiece, something that takes true artistic vision and skills. I seriously did not know Matt had it in him! And to top it off, his voice sounded strong and full, quite unlike he's ever sounded on the show. This may be one of the most dramatic turnarounds in Idol history. Wow.
Score: 9.8
Dwight D'Eon "Undone"
Destiny: While two people before Dwight stepped their game up to another level, Dwight remained unchanged from previous weeks with this performance. His choice to remain seated during this song was ill-fitting, and he seemed vocally and emotionally disconnected from the song the entire performance. It was weak, and he fell really short of the song's potential.
Score: 5.5
Carly Rae Jespen "Georgia On My Mind"
Destiny: Carly Rae's voice is so distinct and so appealing to the ear, and it was in it's full glory with her artsy interpretation of this song. The whole performance was so fresh and very radio-friendly. While others may be having their personal bests this week, Carly Rae absolutely remains the contestant who is the most ready for the music industry.
Score: 9.0
Brian Melo "Bold As Love"
Destiny: I am not familiar with this song, but I can tell that Brian did a good job with it. His voice sounded good throughout, and he certainly commanded the stage. Brian has yet to find the perfect song and performance to really highlight him as a star, but undoubtedly he has the skill set to do it.
Score: 8.5
Khalila Glanvile "Natural Woman"
Destiny: When Ben announced what song Khalila would be singing and the long list of fabulous singers who have done the song, I was sure that we were in for a huge letdown. I was wrong! While I didn't think it was as amazing as the judges and Ben thought it was, I thought Khalila sounded good and added a little touch of style to the song. I could have used more in both departments, but it was unquestionably the best thing she's done on the show. And she looked gorgeous from head to toe.
Score: 8.5
Greg Neufeld "Long Black Veil"
Destiny: Greg sounded decent on this song, but, unlike most of his fellow contestants, he did not have a personal best with this performance. The whole thing seemed a little on the stiff side, and the song choice was not a good fit. Greg seems to have lost the natural coolness and confidence he had last season. In everything he does now he seems so reserved and nervous, and this was no exception.
Score: 7.5
Martha Joy "Love Child"
Destiny: I thought this was the best thing Martha Joy has done on this show, so I was surprised that the judges (who normally give her an undeserved tongue bath) did not like it. That being said, eventhough I do think it was her best, I still think she is the worst in this competition. Her vocals are weak, and her delivery style is formal and stiff, even on an up-tempo song like this. I still don't know how she made it this far in the competition.
Score: 6.0
