Canadian Idol Top 10
Live Up To Their Reputation
The ten finalists hit the big stage this week on Canadian Idol, and they lived up to their overall poor reputation. With only a very small handful of contestants with any star potential, the night was full of mediocre performances of number one hit songs. Thank goodness we still have Ben Mulroney to carry the show between performances. This surely must be his most difficult season yet.
Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI5 Top 10: Number One Hits.
Dwight D'Eon "Unwell"
Destiny: Nice straitjacket, Dwight. Not since Jacob Hoggard have we seen a costume on the Idol stage. Unfortunately, Dwight's vocals were sub par on this one, not matching up to his attempt to create some drama onstage.
Score: 7.0
Liza: Oh wow. That completely went over my head. I just couldn't get past the fact that he was wearing a leather straitjacket while singing yet another Matchbox Twenty song while channeling DAUGHTRY!!! with the guy-liner and over-intensity. This song is a better fit for him than the last Matchbox Twenty song he did, but the vocals still don't quite cut the mustard. And I don't like the grading-on-a-curve comments the judges made. Why should we reward someone for early mediocrity? If that's how we should vote, then Sanjaya should be our American Idol.
Score: 7.0
Khalila Glanville "Killing Me Softly"
Destiny: I love her outfit. That's about all that stood out with this performance, however. As usual with Khalila, she got through the song, but there was nothing special about it.
Score: 7.0
Liza: I'm right there with you, Destiny. It was sung well technically (until the end), but it was rather dull. I found myself wishing she would have started with the Roberta Flack version and then segued into the Fugees version. That would have made it at least somewhat interesting
Score: 7.25
Carly Rae Jepsen "Inside And Out"
Destiny: The first one to hit the stage this week with some star quality. She commanded the stage with this cute pop performance.
Score: 8.5
Liza: She does command the stage better than most in this competition, but I'm with Zack on this one. I didn't get it. I didn't get her song choice. Why would you ever want to sing this song if you weren't constricted by a Bee Gees or disco theme? And I especially didn't get that outfit. I thought she was going to remove her raincoat to reveal some hot dress, but she never did. Not that doing that wouldn't have made me roll my eyes, but at least it would have made some bit of sense.
Score: 7.5
Brian Melo "If You Could Only See"
Destiny: Canadian Enrique sounded particularly Enrique this week. He's pretty good, just a little lacking in all areas. Oh, and Ben, you have an open invitation to come eat with me anytime too.
Score: 8.5
Liza: I applaud the song choice, but he was slightly shaky in his vocals, and his voice sounded a bit muffled. I don't know if it was his singing or technical difficulties, though. This wasn't my favorite Brian Melo performance, but it was a lot better than most tonight.
Score: 7.75
Mila Miller "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours"
Destiny: She seems like a nice girl, but this was weak and amateur and awkward. Made me crave to hear Fantasia's version.
Score: 6.0
Liza: I would have settled for hearing Lisa Tucker's version compared to this. Mila didn't quite hit all the right notes, and although she moved about the stage and theater, her energy was strangely lacking. She was just going through the motions and phoning it in.
Score: 6.5
Jaydee Bixby "It's Only Make Believe"
Destiny: Could he be anymore charming singing in the senior's home in his video piece? And I totally love the hair slicked back. His voice sounded awesome on this song. He's head and shoulders and body above everyone else in the Top 10. Natural performance, vocals and command of the stage mixed with his innocence is all so appealing.
Score: 9.0
Liza: That intro video alone will keep him in the competition for weeks and weeks despite any vocal mis-steps. Singing to senior citizens? Gosh golly! But it makes sense since that's his target audience. This guy makes Steffi D seem futuristic in comparison. I slightly disagree with the effusive praise. I didn't think he was head and shoulders above everyone else tonight. He had some really good moments, but his opening was a little weak, and the vibrato was way distracting. And this music? So not my cup of tea. You couldn't pay me to listen to a CD full of Jaydee Bixby type of music.
Score: 8.0
Greg Neufeld "All These Things That I've Done"
Destiny: Greg has lost his coolness that I thought he had last year. He seems so overreaching and unnatural in most of the stuff he's done this season, including this performance. His vocals were weak, and for the most part it seemed like he was just trying to keep up with/get through the song. It fell pretty flat.
Score: 7.5
Liza: I disagree. I thought he sounded really good, but his stage presence is awwwwkward. He looks uncomfortable, and he was making some weird faces. Vocally, though, I really enjoyed it, and I give him props for being one of the few to choose a No. 1 hit from this decade.
Score: 8.5
Martha Joy "The Power of Love"
Destiny: She gives Celine a bad name. Her interpretation of her catalog is just pure dreck, both vocally and performance-wise. Yikes and yuck. What are the judges thinking? Strong vocal performance?! Best singer here?! Please!
Score: 4.0
Liza: I could not believe the judges were going on about her vocal prowess after this performance. This was her weakest performance vocally. She went way flat going into the chorus and dropped a few words. Her really annoying habit of drawing out her notes too long to glory note it (or milking it, as Jake says) messes with the timing every time. And Celine again?! Hello, one trick pony!
Score: 4.5
Tara Oram "You Win My Love"
Destiny: If Carrie Underwood had any personality or energy, she'd be a lot like Tara. The blonde hair, similar face, sparkly outfit and weak vocals all fit the bill. It doesn't really do anything for me. Hey, if Carrie can win Idol, awards and be a big success, I guess Tara can, too, eh?
Score: 7.5
Liza: Please. Tara can't lick Carrie Underwood's boots. This was another country fair/Carrie Under-whelming performance from Tara. It was fine, but there's just nothing special about it. I feel like she does the same songs every week.
Score: 7.25
Matt Rapley "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"
Destiny: This had much more energy and spirit than we've seen from Matt thus far, but the performance still wasn't anything to write home about. His voice is decent for the most part (a few clunkers here and there), but it isn't greatness by any means.
Score: 6.5
Liza: This was a surprising pimp-spot number, but hey, if Khalila can get it for doing "I Can't Help Myself", why not Matt with yet another Idol staple? I think this was probably one of his best performances of the season, and he looked more comfortable and lively than he ever has, but pimp-spot worthy? That probably says more about the rest of the Top 10 than it does about Matt.
Score: 7.25
