Top 8 Girls Reign Supreme
After a disastrous Tuesday night with the male contestants, it wouldn't be difficult for the American Idol girls to outshine them this week. And outshine them they did. With better song choices (though not their best), voices, and showmanship than the boys, the girls proved once again that this is their season to lose.
The It's Destiny! guest panelist this week is 26-year-old Jennifer from Seattle, Washington.
Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the AI6 Semi-Finals Round Three: The Girls.
Jordin Sparks "Heartbreaker"
Jennifer: Hello! It's nice to be back on the panel tonight. And it's nice to have the Idol girls back too. Like Randy said, this is a totally different show compared to the male episode. I didn't love this song for Jordin, but she did sing it well. She's fun to watch. I like her voice and her energy.
Score: 8.7
Liza: Glad to have you, Jennifer! I actually like this song choice for Jordin because with all the R&B divas here, she needs to do something to set herself apart, and this was a good way to do it. It's a hard song to sing, and although she had one or two pitchy spots, she handled the song very well and brought good energy.
Score: 8.5
Tammy: Meh. I wasn't buying this. I didn't think the song suited her at all. Jordin can't pull off the aggression necessary for the song, and came off as a bit cheesy and contrived. Her curly hair looked lovely tonight, though.
Score: 7.0
Destiny: I am on the fence about the song. I didn't really think it suited her, but I agree with Liza that it's a good idea for her to set herself apart from the crowd of belters. She has such presence on the stage- I agree with Jennifer in that Jordin is really fun to watch. And her voice is so appealing and versatile.
Score: 8.5
Sabrina Sloan "Don't Let Go"
Jennifer: It was nice to see the bits about Sabrina wanting to be Katie Couric. I feel like I don't even know her because she had no air time before this round, so it's nice to get some background on her. Her voice is good and I like her style. She was so much better than any of the guys last night. I liked it but I don't know if she will make it to next week.
Score: 8.0
Liza: I feel the same way about not knowing Sabrina. I enjoyed her intro a bit more than the performance, though. She hit a few rough patches in the beginning and a little bit at the end. And the song was dominated by the backup singers after the first verse, and Sabrina just resorted to doing some self-indulgent runs. Meh.
Score: 7.25
Tammy: I can't help but think that Sabrina put more effort into her wardrobe this week than her song. Stacked next to a handful of female competitors who do the r&b thing much better vocally and performance-wise, Sabrina's flaws suddenly seem all the more evident. There is nothing unique about her. And WORD to the rough vocals. Ye-ikes.
Score: 7.3
Destiny: I really like Sabrina, but I can't argue with what any of you have said. This season the producers have made it really hard to get to know most of these contestants, and Sabrina just isn't doing her part to overcome that as much as she needs to. As for the song, it was written for an ensemble, and it showed. It will be a shame if she doesn't make it to the next round, but I'm with Jennifer in that I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't.
Score: 7.5
Antonella Barba "Put Your Records On"
Jennifer: Antonella plays and teaches the violin? Wouldn't have guessed that. I liked this song choice for her better than anything she's done before. Her voice is just so not great, though. She obviously should not go any further on the show.
Score: 6.0
Liza: This was definitely her best performance, and she picked a song that was perfect for her voice, but she was all over the place on this song vocally. The beginning was quite nice, actually, but then she lost it a bit, regained it and then lost it again at the end.
Score: 6.0
Tammy: Antonella is way out of her league at this point. I have to agree that the song choice worked in her favor, though, as it made the most of whatever vocal skills she does have. It was no magic pill, however, as once again, her voice was shaky and she lacked confidence onstage. At this point, Antonella seems to be the female equivalent of Sanjaya. And it would not shock me at all to see both of them (shudder)...in the top 12.
Score: 6.0
Destiny: She started the song off so lovely. I actually thought it was going to be the perfect song choice for her and that she would redeem herself. Unfortunately, her voice betrayed her halfway through the song. She is so beautiful, it's crazy. She is the epitome of someone who could be a pop star by having her vocal problems erased in the studio.
Score: 6.0
Haley Scarnato "If My Heart Had Wings"
Jennifer: Haley is so cutesy, she's like a children's performer or a young Kathie Lee. She doesn't really belong in this competition. I don't know how she made the semi-finals, because the judges have not had anything nice to say about her since.
Score: 7.5
Liza: Yeah, it was really more "Up With People" than "American Idol". Haley has a very pleasant, pretty voice, and she'd be a good Broadway or Disney singer. But she is just not the kind of singer people would get excited over in this competition.
Score: 6.75
Tammy: Haley seemed to enjoy herself this week, and appeared to be pleased with her song choice, which is a bit baffling, as it more or less put the final nail in her coffin. Oh you poor, misguided Idol contestant. In all fairness, I don't even think she'd be good on Broadway. Her voice seems very thin and limited. But...at least she had fun before she got the boot?
Score: 6.25
Destiny: Good call, Jennifer, on labeling her as a young Kathie Lee. She is a sweet singer. I don't think she's horrible, she's just not at all right for this show. Simon says that the song didn't show her properly as an artist, but I think it showed exactly what she is as an artist. I don't know what they thought she was all about when they put her in the Top 24. Because this is it.
Score: 7.5
Stephanie Edwards "Sweet Thing"
Jennifer: Stephanie commands the stage like a pro. That being said, I didn't love this song and I thought this was her weakest performance on the show. But even her weakest moment was still good. That cannot be said about the male contestants.
Score: 8.0
Liza: I agree ... it was her weakest performance and yet still better than almost all of the guys. Stephanie could not handle the low notes (although she did handle them much better than Phil Stacey!), and she also had some serious tempo issues (a la Chris Sligh). She was holding her notes too long and coming in half a step too slow. I expect better from her.
Score: 7.25
Tammy: Despite her problems vocally (and there was more than one cringeworthy moment), I have to disagree with both of you, as I enjoyed this performance the most out of anything she's done on Idol so far. I did like the song she chose this week. Because I like to be different, and all. Or maybe she just sounded better because she was preceded by Haley. Heh.
Score: 8.4
Destiny: Tammy, your desire to be different is so endearing. HEE! And I'll let you stay different because I agree with the other two that this was her worst showing to date. I don't like the song. She definitely is one of the best, though, and deserves a spot in the Top 12. Sabrina is her biggest competition, as both are big-voiced singers who were never shown before the semi-finals and who are in direct competition with the judges' favorite big-voiced singers, Melinda and LaKisha. Stephanie has edged-out Sabrina methinks over the last three weeks, so she should be safe.
Score: 7.3
LaKisha Jones "I Have Nothing"
Jennifer: Does anyone else have a problem with Ryan being so blatantly partial to LaKisha? It just doesn't seem proper. I think the judges are a little too kind to her as well. This was a good performance. I wasn't in love with it, though.
Score: 8.0
Liza: Ryan does seem to have a soft spot for her, but I don't think anything he does is going to have an effect on voting. Simon thought he wanted to date Alaina, and look where she is now. As for LaKisha's performance, I feel the same way as Jennifer. It was good vocally, but it was a little bit uninspired, from the song choice to the way she sang it. Until the end, it was pretty much all at one volume, and, like Stephanie, she was holding out her notes too long, which caused her to get behind the music a bit.
Score: 8.0
Tammy: I have had just about enough of this song on Idol. Please, seal this one in the AI vaults already! We don't need eleventy billion versions of this song! Especially when every rendition on Idol always winds up sounding like someone listened to The Bodyguard soundtrack on an endless loop pre-Idol., as it is usually note-for-note the same. LaKisha was good, but I have to agree, I am not sure she is worthy of all the hype.
Score: 8.3
Destiny: Uninspired is a good word to describe this performance. It was good, but it wasn't the best version we've ever heard on Idol. I am still waiting for LaKisha to be the greatness I think she can be. I don't know if the judges are pinning their hopes on the greatness they think she can be and are thus overpraising her, or if they really think this performance was great. I don't quite get it. I'd like to see her take it to the next level.
Score: 8.0
Gina Glocksen "Call Me When You're Sober"
Jennifer: I liked Gina's outfit and hair and song choice the best out of anything she's done on the show. It all seemed a much better fit than the diva she's been trying to be. I just don't know why it took her so long to do that. Her vocals weren't perfect, but it was entertaining.
Score: 8.0
Liza: I agree 100%. This is what she should be doing, not belty ballads. Gina struggled a bit with the song; you could see it on her face, and she shouted quite a lot, but this was definitely more of what I think everyone wants to see from her. I really didn't think she'd be able to pull this song off, as Amy Lee herself sometimes struggles with her own songs, but Gina handled it quite well.
Score: 7.75
Tammy: Gina did end up yelling her vocals at times during the performance, and sometimes her stage movements seemed a bit...awkward...but the style of song did seem to suit her the best so far, and it seemed like a natural fit for her to be doing something with more edge (do you hear that, Sundance?). The top 12 is going to be very dull if she isn't there to bring a bit of a reprieve from the endless stream of ballads from the women.
Score: 8.2
Destiny: Good onya, Gina. Glad to see her finally do something that suits her. It not only is more so much more entertaining to watch, but it also sets her apart from the others and should help her go much further in the competition than if she kept insisting on going head to head with LaKisha and Melinda by doing the belter ballads. And the video clips definitely help Gina's cause. She is funny and interesting, and I like how much she likes to be on American Idol.
Score: 8.5
Melinda Doolittle "I'm A Woman"
Jennifer: I thought Melinda showed a lot more personality this week than she has before. It was almost like a different person on the stage. I guess all the high praise from the judges has reached her brain and given her some confidence.
Score: 8.9
Liza: She brought a show tonight, both vocally and stage-wise. Girlfriend worked the catwalk! And I really liked how she interacted with the backup singers. Shout out to her peeps! From the beginning, the only thing lacking from her was confidence, and I think she's found it now. I think she's going to continue to get better and better with the experience, which is really scary for everyone else since she's already been pretty much vocally pitch perfect on every song so far.
Score: 9.25
Tammy: Agreeance! I loved how she strutted her stuff tonight. It's so much more enjoyable to watch a performance on Idol when you're fairly confident that the performer is going to do well. Melinda manages to bring it week after week. My only criticism with this performance is the song choice, which while it enabled her to bring the sass, also brings a bit ol' helping of cheese at the same time. And how odd is it to see her personality completely change to Meek Melinda as soon as she's done performing? It's like somebody flips a switch!
Score: 8.9
Destiny: First off, why does Simon keep insisting on dissing Jennifer Hudson every chance he gets? American Idol WAS a stepping stone for her! She did not win the competition. No one from the Idol organization offered her any recording contract or jobs. Her time on Idol allowed her to be seen by the Dreamgirls producers and thus was a stepping stone to get her into their audition and thus secure her Oscar-winning role. Get over yourself, Simon. As for Melinda, it was fun to see her strut around the stage like we've never seen her do before. However, I still think something is missing from her. Her voice is good (perhaps even "pitch perfect"), but it doesn't have anything special or signature to it. I wouldn't know it was her if I heard it on the radio. While I enjoy her singing, it's not a voice that I crave to hear again after she leaves the stage.
Score: 8.8
Who Should Be Eliminated:
Jennifer:Antonella, Haley
Liza: Antonella, Haley
Tammy: Antonella, Haley
Destiny: Antonella, Haley
Who Will Be Eliminated:
Jennifer: Haley, Sabrina
Liza: Haley. I still think they're tossing 3 guys. But if they stay with 2 each, then it will be Haley and Stephanie
Tammy: Haley, Sabrina. And as bad as the guys were, there's definitely at least 2 women who deserve to go this week, so I hope they don't pick on the fellas.
Destiny: Haley, Sabrina
