Everything's Standard On Canadian Idol 4

The Top 3 tackled the standards this week on Canadian Idol 4. They prepared for Monday's performances by spending some time in New York with Tony Bennett. This musical genre is an odd choice for a Top Three week, as it didn't allow the contestants to show what they each do best and prove they deserve a spot in the Final Two. The contestants were able to make something of it, however, turning in several notable performances.

Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI4 Top 3: Standards.

Craig Sharpe "The Way You Look Tonight"
Destiny: Craig's voice still sounds really good, but he did seem to be very nervous during this song, thus not as crisp and cutting as usual. Not a disaster by any means, but not his best by any means either.
Score: 8.0
Tammy: Craig looked terrified tonight. His vocals, which are usually his saving grace, were decidedly weak and shaky on this song. As usual, his performance left something to be desired. Like, emotion.
Score: 6.8
Liza: His vocals weren't the only thing that was shaky. His twitching legs were seriously distracting me the entire song! I thought his pitch was a bit off, but I did, however, like the part where he let his voice soar in the middle.
Score: 7.0

Eva Avila "God Bless The Child"
Destiny: Eva commands the song and the stage like a superstar. She is the real deal. Love that she can be just as powerful being understated like she was on this song as she is when belting it out. Great.
Score: 9.2
Tammy: This genre definitely suits Eva. She continues to impress and lead the pack. Which, considering the pack, may not be saying much.
Score: 9.0
Liza: It was sung very nicely, but did it warrant that kind of tongue-bath and Kalan Porter dissing? Uh, no. Here's the thing. When Jenny Gear and Theresa Sokyrka sang this song in their auditions, I felt their genuine emotion, as I did when Kalan sang 'Nature Boy' on his Top 3 night. With Eva here, I felt like she was just singing like that to sound pretty. Luckily for her, she did sound pretty, but I wasn't blown away by it.
Score: 8.4

Tyler Lewis "Just A Gigolo (I Ain't Got Nobody)"
Destiny: I totally appreciate Tyler's attempt at throwing some personality into his performance. It was quite a change for him! I'm sure his fans were giddy watching this. Unfortunately, Tyler's vocals were really warpy and weak.
Score: 7.8
Tammy: I'll admit that it wasn't his best vocal performance. But Tyler turned up the showmanship more than a few notches this week, and rid of the 'horse riding' movement, gave a really strong, entertaining performance, revealing a fun, quirky side I hadn't realized existed. Oh, and he is looking completely droolworthy as well. H-A-W-T!
Score: 8.7
Liza: Eeks. I hated that. It was tuneless most of the time, and when Tyler actually was hitting a tune, it wasn't the right one. He tried to Elvis up this song, and it made me ache to hear David Lee Roth's version of this song. That is just crazy.
Score: 4.5

Craig Sharpe "Danny Boy"
Destiny: Beautiful singing by Mr. Sharpe. And what a way to lock in massive votes from the Irish of Newfoundland with that song choice. Good onya!
Score: 9.0
Tammy: Blah. As much as I wanted to rag on another Craig Sharpe performance, I cannot. I love this song, and the fact that he chose it (though I question how it really fits into the theme for this week...it's a bit of a stretch, CI) is enough for me. His lack of emotion actually might have worked for him with this song. Hee!
Score: 8.8
Liza: He sang it very well, but this song and his singing in general is seriously boring. And he's wearing way too much makeup.
Score: 8.0

Eva Avila "They Can't Take That Away From Me"
Destiny: What a gem Eva is! This is one special girl. Please, Idol managers, do NOT bungle this girl's career once the show ends. She is so wonderful! Love everything about her and this performance. Methinks Zack's diss of this performance was purely his strategy to irritate people into voting Eva into the Final Two.
Score: 9.5
Tammy: This song seemed to be the weaker of her two selections tonight. It seemed to be lacking in the personality department. I couldn't help but think about how Steffi would have sung this song and blown me away.
Score: 8.6
Liza: I felt like she did a much better job of getting into the vibe of this song and the era. She is easily the best of the remaining group. By miles. Her singing is lovely.
Score: 8.5

Tyler Lewis "It Had To Be You"
Destiny: Tyler sounded warped on this song like he did earlier in the
evening (and last week). Like his last song, however, Tyler poured on the
personality, which will surely be enough to secure him a spot in the Final Two no matter how he sounded.
Score: 7.5
Tammy: See comments from performance #1. Not his best vocals, but still, H-A-W-T! And really, that's enough for me at this point. I need me some eye candy!
Score: 8.9
Liza: His rehearsal with Tony Bennett was the epitome of deer in headlights. Luckily, his actual performance was much better. I really liked his voice in this, particularly in the beginning. Nice shout-out to the orchestra. Too bad about that last horribly off-key note, though!
Score: 8.3
