SMOKIN' IN THE
BOYS ROOM

(Recap by Liza)

Phil Ritchie's elimination last week on Rock Star: Supernova made him the third male to leave the show, compared to just one woman. A fact that was duly noted by the remaining men, who seem to have turned the rockers' mansion into a grown-up version of the kindergarten school yard.

After the elimination show, the rockers toast their departed comrade. Ryan Star calls Phil "the first true contender to leave" and interviews that they all expected Zayra Alvarez to leave. Magni says that Supernova "just made their first mistake." The magnanimous Storm Large makes a point to recognzie Patrice Pike for her performance in the result show, calling it the "best performance out of any of us."

Toby Rand is not nearly as gracious towards Zayra, bluntly telling her that he honestly thought she was going. Zayra, who has taken her criticism in stride, agrees, and Storm again is there for a kind word, saying that it wasn't based on her performance at all but for her style of singing. Zayra interviews that she is truly sorry Phil had to go, but she has to take her place in the safe group; Phil would have.

Meanwhile, in the testosterone room, aka the keg room, the boys denounce the girls for having cooties. Josh Logan complains that it definitely should have been Zayra to go home instead of Phil. Toby says that it's a "disgrace" that two of the girls are still there. "There are six chicks there," he says. "We're getting over-run." Ryan offers up a reasoning for the girls' survival - they're bringing something different. And Lukas Rossi serves up warning - "Now they're going to see just how the boys can really rule."

Magni seems to be the only guy not involved in the girl bashing. Instead, he's watching video footage of his son in Iceland. His son is as bald as he is and is shown strumming a guitar. Cute! Magni says he was mentally tired, but seeing the video puts him back on track.

Jason Newsted visits the mansion to give the rockers a stagecraft workshop. It's about the person and how they react to and interact with everyone else, he says prior to showing them video of their performance from last week.

Toby is first up to be critiqued. Magni likes how he walks around the stage, and Storm says he's like a "kangarilla". Jason tells him that the mic stand works for him and that he should continue to use that. Moving on to Josh, Jason says he's seen him do much better than that and suggests that he's used to having his instrument and without it there's not enough for him to do. Josh continues to be inflexible and interviews that if they want him, they're going to have to take him as he is.

Storm gets rave reviews from Jason, who says you can tell that she has spent a lot of time fronting a band and LEADING the band. Ryan's stage jump gets a little bit of play, and Jason calls it "rad". Zayra's catsuit gets some whistles, and Dana Andrews calls her a "sexy beast". Zayra announces that she's keeping the outfit. (seeing as how NASA doesn't want it back, and all - Tammy)

Next up is Jill Gioia, whose grinding on Gilby Clarke made him very uncomfortable. Jill says that she's very critical of herself and that it's hard to watch. As they watch the clip, Dilana notes that Gilby is running away. Jason points out a moment where Jill hits Gilby with the mic stand and says that as the leader of a band, the number one thing is to always know where your guys are. Jill starts to make excuses and gets defensive, leading Jason to interview that Jill takes it as a personal attack when no one else does. Toby also interviews that Jill has a tendency to talk. And talk. And talk some more. As Jill keeps going, Lukas and Toby decide to play tic-tac-toe. Bwah!

Dilana looks distressed while watching her performance. And although Magni says it was great in everything, Dilana feels as if it was vocally her worst performance she's done in a long time. She feels like bursting into tears watching it because she's so embarrassed. Now I'm not sure if she's just insecure or if those were crocodile tears, but either way, it's not a good idea to look weak in front of someone you are auditioning for.

Patrice was not pleased with her performance either, and she said that if that was the first time anyone has seen her, they weren't really seeing her. She got right away what she has to do.

In the next segment, Lukas enters the song room to see this week's songs up on the wall. He hates that room, calling it "annoying" and "intense", so he takes all of the songs off the wall and brings them out to the patio outside. His instinct is right, and there is none of the usual drama over song selection.

Storm only wants to do "Changes" by David Bowie. Josh wants "Higher Ground", and when Patrice sees that Tommy Lee is going to be playing drums on that song, she wants it also. Josh says that he would rather sing the song in Stevie Wonder style but Tommy would want to play it in Red Hot Chili Peppers style, which Josh wouldn't enjoy as much. No one wants "867-5309", but Zayra takes it, saying that the song found her and that she's "letting destiny lead the way."

Another song that no one really wants is "Santeria" by Sublime. Storm, who seems to know every song known to man, sings a few bars of it, and Josh decides on that, giving "Higher Ground" to Patrice. And even though she wanted it, Patrice now gets nervous thinking of the pressure of playing with Tommy. Does she need to be under a bigger microscope this week after last week's bottom 3 fiasco? Inside the mansion, Ryan says to Patrice, "This is Tommy Lee". And for some reason, Patrice takes offense and asks him not to say that and that she doesn't want to hear it from him. "I'm not trying to be a bitch, but you keep saying it to me," she says. Ryan is incredulous since it was the first time he has said it to her. Others have, but he hadn't. Patrice is forced to apologize, and as Ryan walks away, he mutters "Bitch" to the camera. Ryan interviews that for Patrice, her performance this week became a do or die performance. Patrice confides in Jill that the pressure is getting to her in regards to playing with Tommy.

At rehearsal, Storm sings a lovely version of "Changes". She knows it would be a challenging song and it makes her nervous about how far she's venturing because it may not be what Supernova wants to see from her. Josh adds some beat-boxing to "Santeria" and insists on bringing soul to all of his songs. He knows what he wants to do and what he wants to be. Makes you wonder why he doesn't just call up a newspaper and talk smack about Supernova so he can get the boot and do what he wants to do.

Zayra comes in for her weekly rearranging of her songs. She brings her "producer's mind" each time and changes everything around. Musical director Paul Mirkovich says that Zayra "took everything that's cool about this song and got rid of it". Sasha reminds her that she's already done the rearranging thing and that the only thing she hasn't done yet is sing a song the way it's supposed to be sung and kill it. Zayra is insistent, however, and continues on her merry way, "singing" it like the punk song she thinks it is instead of the goofy 80's pop song that it really is. Paul can hardly contain his laughter while he sings backup.

The show closes with the boys playing basketball. And showing why they are singers and not athletes.
