KILLING ME SOFTLY
(Recap by Liza)
The band members of Supernova have made no qualms about seeking a harder sound, which they did not get from several contestants. And the voting audience voted accordingly, sending Jenny Galt, Dana Andrews and Josh Logan into the bottom three. All three gave harder performances to try to save themselves, but Jenny's voice proved to be not right for Supernova, and they sent her home as the third person eliminated from Rock Star: Supernova.

The show started out with more drama from the mansion. This time, it was centered on Dana, who expressed frustration at the song choices, wishing she could sing chick rocker songs like Alanis Morisette, Pat Benatar. She also is not quite sure why she gets the "pop star" comments. "I'm arm-pumping, I'm stomping, I'm in people's faces," she proclaims in indignation. (Let's not forget the leopard bustier's day in the sun! - Tammy) And that is precisely where the problem is. She's so conscious of doing all of these things that rockers are supposed to do that it doesn't come across as natural. Dilana offers up some advice, telling Dana to live the lyrics of the song and to get down and "open your legs" and stop being beautiful. That presumably perks Tommy Lee's attention.

Meanwhile, Ryan Star, Toby Rand and Lukas Rossi are watching the performances back as well, and Ryan comments that Dana should just not be on this show. "She's good," he says, but she should be on a pop show. Dave Navarro asks Ryan to address those commments, and Ryan says it's a rock and roll show, and there are some people who aren't as rock and roll. He digs his hole deeper by saying he wants to be on a rock show and he's kind of embarrassed when he sees a pop performance like Dana's. Dana holds her own in this situation, telling Ryan that he should have had a backbone and tell her to her face when she asked him earlier. Ryan claims that he warned her it was a bad decision to sing the song and when she stopped asking for his help, he stopped helping.

Dilana's stock continues to rise after Dave asks her why she helped out a competitor. She replies that she's a loving, giving person and that she doesn't feel threatened by any one person on the stage; she feels honored to be with all of them.

The band decides to move on from the drama and picks Magni to do the encore. Magni, Bono glasses and all, reprises "Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots to an appreciative crowd. Brooke Burke then reveals the rockers who were in the initial bottom 3 - Jenny, Dana and Ryan. But they were not the only ones who hit the bottom after the world-wide vote. Joining them in the bottom 3 at some point were also Josh Logan and Zayra Alvarez.

The first final bottom 3 member is Jenny, who Tommy Lee says has "gone soft" and wants to see her go hard. Jenny picks "Vaseline" by Stone Temple Pilots to try to save herself. She does bring more of an edge to the song and jumps around like Avril Lavigne, but her voice remains more soft and less edgy, and she gets the Jason Newsted look of puzzlement.

Next in the bottom 3 is Dana. Tommy said her performance of "It's My Life" was like watching a "Celine Dion extravaganza". Finally able to sing a song of her own choosing, Dana decides to go "underground" and sings "High Road Easy" by Sass Jordan, a Canadian rock singer who is now a judge on Canadian Idol. Dana seems to take Dilana's advice seriously and finally shows more of what she is capable of. Finally, a Rock Star worthy performance from her.

The last person in the bottom 3 is Josh. His song choice is "Heart-Shaped Box" by Nirvana. And now that whole "I'm tired of being Mr. Nice Guy" display regarding song choice makes sense. This is a song that Josh obviously wanted last week, but he gave it up and didn't want to do it again. He slowed down "Come As You Are" last night, but with his second shot at Nirvana, he showed a lot more edge and won over the crowd, not to mention his fellow rockers, but his natural mellowness still showed.

After deliberating, Gilby Clarke thanks all three for giving great efforts before offering up some criticism. Jenny started out strong but went soft, and tonight's edge was back but the vocals might not be the right ones for them. Dana has a great attitude and can really sing, and she brought the house down tonight, but they're not sure if she has what it takes to front them. Gilby takes Josh to task for waiting until tonight to finally bring the rock. Hatchet-man Tommy says he has to look out for the best interests of the band. Dana gets sent back to the rocker pod of safety while Ryan looks on unhappily. So with Josh and Jenny left standing, Tommy says, "Jenny, you gotta go."

Dave congratulates Jenny for stepping outside her box, and Jenny says last night's comments started a change in her, calling it "the best slap in the face I've ever gotten in my life." She's always played it safe, and she has learned from what the judges have told her and is honored to be in the company of the other rockers.
