Top 7 Guys of Canadian Idol 4 Sing For A Spot In The Finals
The Top 7 male contestants on Canadian Idol 4 hit the stage Tuesday night in a fight for a spot in the Top 10. Unfortunately, that fight wasn't very strong. The guys mirrored the girls this week with several poor song choices and uninspired performances. Again, the cream of the crop is very evident.
Following is the It's Destiny! panel's take on the CI4 Semi-Finals Round 3: The Guys.
Craig Sharpe "Bohemian Rhapsody"
Tammy: Am I the only one who thinks that those tattoos look completely out of place on that boy? As for the performance...do these people not pay attention? Because Queen went over so well last week and all. Oh wait. It didn't! Craig's Bo Rhap is so calculated this week, from the shedding of the jacket (oy!) to the drop to the knees in a completely anticlimatic manner. Also, Craig's hair is becoming frighteningly reminiscent of that belonging to Tina Turner. Not a good thing.
Score: 6.0
Liza: Yeah, seriously! What is happening with his hair?! What is happening with this song choice?! First of all, this is not the right song for the piano round. Second of all, this is not the right song for Craig, he of no edge. The one thing it is right for is his range. He's the only guy here who could handle the high notes. However, borrowing from the Kellie Pickler school of staging is not exactly something this boy should be doing. Nor is singing a song such as this.
Score: 6.0
Destiny: I hadn't noticed the similarities to Pickler's staging, but now that Tammy mentioned it, that's all I can see! I am in agreement with you both that this song choice did not suit Craig at all. It was not believable in the slightest. Yes, he has a lovely voice and was able to hit the notes, but it wasn't vocally great, and the performance was just not natural. I couldn't believe that he got such high praise from the judges. Even Zack! I expected them to slaughter Craig. Weirdness.
Score: 6.0
Brandon Jones "Easy"
Tammy: Well someone obviously wasn't paying attention last week when he was raked over the coals. Why this song? Why? Please pick something that was released while you were alive, at least! Brandon added nothing to the song. Canada, do the right thing and just let him go quietly into the night.
Score: 6.4
Liza: Why this song? As I said last week, Brandon seems dead set on borrowing from Idols past. Once again, he delves into the past-Idol collection, borrowing this one from Taylor Hicks. Luckily, there are no Woo's. Thank God. This is one of Brandon's better vocal efforts, but that doesn't say all that much. He is very outclassed amongst this group. And his on-stage mannerisms just do not mesh with what he is singing, as usual.
Score: 7.0
Destiny: Taylor? And here I thought he was borrowing this tune from Jim Verraros. Either way, it is not a good song choice for anyone! Leave it to Lionel, thank you. Despite the song choice and slightly shaky vocals, however, I still like Brandon and think he has the stuff teen idols are made of.
Score: 7.0
Keith Macpherson "Tempted"
Tammy: This has to be my least favorite Keith performance so far. Is he even capable of singing anything without doing it in that 'happy go lucky' manner? Very forgettable. Hopefully he gets by on the merits of previous weeks, as he is capable of better.
Score: 7.2
Liza: I love his music choices; he has great taste in music. While it's nice to see him go more up-tempo this week, I agree that it was his worst performance of the show so far. It all came across as very cheesy and geeky and light and fluffy. Which I'm sure will appeal to the masses in a similar way that Clay Aiken and Taylor Hicks did. I agree with Zack that it was not very edgy.
Score: 7.5
Destiny: I liked the song choice, but either he or the pianist was seriously off-tempo and in the wrong key. It was like two different performances happening at once. When Keith went and shouted something at the pianist towards the end of the song, I was convinced it was a request to slow it down or raise the key. I don't know if that's what he was saying, but it should have been, and it should have happened earlier in the song. The whole thing was just disjointed, and as said before, it was Keith's worst showing to date on Idol
Score: 7.5
Chad Doucette "Iris"
Tammy: A huge improvement from last week's performance! His voice has such a unique tone, and he definitely benefited by not trying to do too much with this song (though again, I could have done without the glory note). Also? I think I've just been hypnotized by Chad's eyes.
Score: 9.0
Liza: He nailed this one. He brings such heart-felt emotion to his performances. His Cher tone kind of bothers me, but overall it was a very impressive vocal and performance. I liked the glory note. I guess I'm a sucker for it if it sounds good.
Score: 9.0
Destiny: I'm all on board for this one, too! Man, Chad is a charmer, and he has the best, most distinct voice in the competition. As usual, he left me wanting more and looking forward to what he does next. This was a good performance, and I have to agree with Zack in that I like Chad's more serious, artsy cool side rather than his comedic tongue-in-cheek stuff.
Score: 9.0
Sheldon Elter "Hard to Handle"
Tammy: Well...at least Sheldon stepped out of his box and tried to sing something from this century. He wasn't all that convincing, however. Sheldon seemed a bit stiff and uncomfortable singing the song. Paired with a band, he may have been able to pull it off a little better.
Score: 7.6
Liza: And Sheldon's unlikely run is likely to end after this karaoke performance. It was good while it lasted, but I didn't buy this performance at all, although he sang it fairly well.
Score: 7.2
Destiny: The second song of the night from the Constantine Maroulis Idol songbook, and, like Craig's before him, Sheldon's choice was just not a good fit. I like Sheldon, but he doesn't bring anything original or exciting to the table.
Score: 7.0
Tyler Lewis "Old Time Rock and Roll"
Tammy: Tyler has the pipes to be singing country music on the radio right now. What's lacking is his confidence on stage, however. Given some time to continue in this competition, Tyler can only improve in that department.
Score: 8.5
Liza: We can only hope. Because the Stompy McStomperpants routine is pretty awful. I did enjoy the audience interaction he had tonight, though. And I especially loved his vocals. He has one of the distinctive voices in this competition, and I really dig how it sounds. His voice is so mature-sounding.
Score: 7.8
Destiny: Tyler has delivered the same thing three times in a row: a good voice paired with an uneasy performance. This week was a slight improvement, because at least he attempted to put some personality and energy on the stage. Step it up!
Score: 7.5
Rob James "Chariot"
Tammy: Wow. This is the first week where it looks like Rob James isn't praying for the earth to swallow him whole. More relaxed and confident on stage, it was easier to enjoy Rob's performance. Despite a few shaky notes, it was one of the top performances of the night.
Score: 8.9
Liza: I'm so glad he finally conquered whatever had been plaguing him in the past weeks. He finally looks comfortable and not at all nervous. I'm not sure he picked the best song to show off his voice, but he sang it very well and looked like the pro that he is.
Score: 8.2
Destiny: Yes, Rob didn't look or sound nervous this week, but he still failed to wow me as a singer or performer. As Shania said, that don't impress me much.
Score: 7.5
