Canadian Idol Gets Barenaked!
The remaining three finalists tackled the music of The Barenaked Ladies this week on Canadian Idol 3. After working with the band over the weekend, Rex Goudie, Aaron Walpole, and Melissa O'Neil hit the stage Tuesday night, performing two BNL songs apiece. While the performances were much better than last week's Elvis disaster, there wasn't much to write home about.
Despite the lack of strong star power, the judges were in full cover-all-the-bases mode this week, making sure to compliment all three contestants in some capacity, preparing for the inevitable that one will indeed be the winner.
Here's the It's Destiny! panel's take on this week's performances.
Rex Goudie "Brian Wilson"
Destiny: Rex tried his best to be good and authentic and free, but he still lacked something original and interesting. Judging by the screams in the audience, however, it won't affect the votes. Maybe Rex hasn't lost his frontrunner status as I had thought.
Score: 7.0
Tammy: The judges praise him for having more movement up on the stage, and yet my impression was just the opposite. Having him plunked behind a mic stand showed absolutely no movement at all. The vocals remain unimpressive. NEXT!
Score: 6.9
Liza: I think this was Rex's best performance since the semifinals. This music really suits him, and he does look very comfortable and relaxed. I thought he sounded great in the beginning but lost it a little bit after the first chorus. He truly looked like a kid in the candy store.
Score: 7.5
Aaron Walpole "Break Your Heart"
Destiny: Aaron certainly gave it his all in this performance. He's really in it to win it, and that always earns points in my book.
Score: 8.5
Tammy: I'm all about the glory notes. Aaron really nailed that part of the song. Nice. He does what he does well.
Score: 8.8
Liza: That was a very professional performance, reminiscent of his Guess Who performance. Vocals were spot on, hair needed to be spit on to get rid of that cowlick. Score: 8.5
Melissa O'Neil "The Old Apartment"
Destiny: Nice to see Melissa's artistic intelligence on display in the opening video footage of her rehearsing with the band. During the performance, she sounded great and poured her all into interpreting this mature song.
Score: 8.0
Tammy: Bland. Uninspired. Devoid of emotion. Disappointing.
Score: 6.0
Liza: Melissa does emote well, but I'm not sure I liked her angsty rocker chick interpretation. I have to say that was my least favorite performance of the first round.
Score: 6.5
Rex Goudie "Call and Answer"
Destiny: Yikes. The opening of this performance was so weak vocally, and the way he stood there looking stiff and scared, it looked like amateur hour to boot. He got vocally better in the middle of the song, but still wasn't worthy of being in the Final Three on an Idol show. You know it was bad when Ben Mulroney didn't even come to his defense.
Score: 5.5
Tammy: Agreed. The first notes were waaay too low for Rex to be attempting. It really highlighted his flaws. Who chose this song?? Idiots. He did look scared and amateurish. I think even Rex knew how bad he sounded. Props to Zack for finally saying what we were all thinking. He's pretty, but the boy can't sing!
Score: 5.0
Liza: Oh dear. I agree with both of you. I do think he sounded much better once he hit the chorus, but it was so train-wrecky in the beginning. Rex made a huge mistake in even choosing a ballad. His appeal lies in his natural charm and spirit (well that and his good looks), and you can't really show that off in a ballad like this.
Score: 5.0
Aaron Walpole "Enid"
Destiny: Aaron sounded good, but he got a bit schmaltzy when what the song really required was irony.
Score: 6.0
Tammy: Eh. The whole thing didn't really seem to gel for me. He had trouble keeping up with the faster part of the song at the end, and I absolutely DESPISE the walking around the audience bit. It doesn't sell the song! Cut it!
Score: 6.5
Liza: See, now this is the song Rex should have done. Although it's not like it helped Aaron to do it because he turned it into Sweatin' with the Oldies. I swear I wrote this before Sass said it: Aaron's outfit and Vegas performance style was so Richard Simmons cheesy. He also sounded a bit out of tune in the first verse and totally could not keep up with the tempo during the fast part and was out of breath when he ran back on the stage after that. That performance might have cost him the finals.
Score: 5.5
Melissa O'Neal "When I Fall"
Destiny: Melissa is definitely the best of the three remaining contestants on CI, and she proved that with this performance.
Score: 8.3
Tammy: Melissa really excels with the more melodic songs. It's her niche. Tonight was no different. She did well, but didn't really excite me.
Score: 8.5
Liza: As much as I thought she sounded lovely, I really couldn't get too excited about that performance either. What got me more fired up was Zack's comment about there not being any rules after he raked Josh Palmer through the coals for playing the guitar. What is up with that?!
Score: 8.0
Who Should Be Eliminated:
Destiny: Rex
Tammy: Rex
Liza: Rex
Who Will Be Eliminated:
Destiny: Aaron
Tammy: Rex
Liza: Aaron
