Minnie Driver:Everything I've Got In My Pocket
On her debut album, Minnie Driver comes out of nowhere with an amazingly nuanced and distinct voice. Or so it seems. Unbeknownst to most, Minnie is a full-fledged musical artist and has been for some time. In fact, we may have known her only as a singer if a certain movie hadn’t come into her life. Driver was on the verge of signing a contract with EMI, when, as Minnie says, “Circle of Friends came along and changed everything.”
After extreme success in the world of film, Minnie faces the inevitable critics who will doubt her before they’ve even heard her. After all, she says, “there aren’t too many actors who’ve made good records.” Critics beware. This isn’t some flighty musical endeavor.
The songs, all written by Driver (except for a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart”), are smartly crafted and deeply personal. “They are songs that reflect the truest version of myself,” she says. “Hopefully, people will connect with that.”
The songs are further complimented by her rich, free vocals, reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan and Dido. Particular gems on the project are the title song, “Everything I’ve Got In My Pocket,” and “Invisible Girl.” The standout track is Driver’s haunting re-interpretation of “Hungry Heart.”
Currently on tour in the UK, Minnie will strap on her guitar and take her music to the streets of the US later this month.
